Academy to offer basic welding class
Aug 28, 2023
LEWISTOWN — Mike McMonigal expected the new electrical installation class offered by the Mifflin County Academy of Science and Technology to fill up.
Certainly not before he had a chance to drink his morning coffee.
“Last week, The Sentinel reported on the free electrical installation class offered by The Academy,” said McMonigal, supervisor of Adult and Post-Secondary Education. “The response to the class was overwhelming and it reached full capacity by 8 a.m.”
The Mifflin County Academy of Science and Technology, 700 Pitt St., Lewistown, is offering basic welding from 5 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays for six weeks, starting Tuesday, Sept. 25. The registration deadline is Wednesday, Sept. 20.
Basic Welding is designed as an introduction to welding. Students will learn safety, welding processes and terminology. Students will get hands-on practice with multiple welding processes including:
• Oxy-Acetylene
• Shield Metal Arc (SMAW)
• Gas Metal Arc (GMAW)
• Gas Tungsten Arc (GTAW)
Students are encouraged to bring their own gloves and safety equipment.
There’s no fee for the class. Tuition is normally $650; however, the tuition fee is being waived thanks to a Manufacturing PA: Training to Career grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Community and Economic Development. The basic welding course is now going to be a required prerequisite for a 10-week adult Certified Welding course that will be offered in the summer of 2024. This class is currently in development.
“We are excited to offer this course at no-cost to our community, so don’t delay,” McMonigal said.
Seating is limited. Call (717) 248-3933 or visit www.theacademy.net for more information.
